Padma Shri Awards 2018 Winners
Padma Shri is the fourth highest award conferred by the Republic of India, after Bharat Ratna, Padma Vihushan, and Padma Bhushan. It is awarded by Government of India every year on Republic Day of India.

Padma Shri was instituted in 1954 along with Padma Vibhushan and Padma Bhushan. The award is given to any individual to honour his or her distinguished contribution in his or her field.

As of 2018, 2912 people have received this award. In 2018 alone, 72 individuals received Padma Shri award for their outstanding work in their specific fields.

Freedom fighter and educationist Asha Devi Aryanayakam was the first person to refuse the Padma Shri in 1954 citing the personal grounds.

Mother Teresa initially refused the Padma Shri twice in 1960 and 1961 as she felt it is inappropriate to receive any award for the service in the name of God. It was Archbishop of Kolkata who persuaded her and she finally accepted the award in 1962.

In 1977, Phanishwar Nath 'Renu' returned the Padma Shri, he had received in 1970, as a protest against the Emergency imposed by the Indira Gandhi Government.
